Setup Wizard
The setup wizard runs automatically after the first activation and guides you through the minimum configuration needed to get a working sports site. It is completely optional — you can skip it or any individual step at any time and return to configure settings manually via SportsPress > Settings.
To launch the wizard manually, navigate to yourdomain.com/wp-admin/?page=sp-setup.
Wizard Steps
The progress bar at the top shows six steps (the Introduction screen is not counted in the progress bar):
Introduction
Heading: Welcome to SportsPress
Describes the wizard and estimates it takes under five minutes. Two actions are available:
Let's Go! — proceeds to Step 1.
Not right now — exits to the WordPress dashboard without running any configuration.
Step 1: Basic Setup
Heading: Basic Setup
Configure the core site settings:
Timezone — Select your city's timezone from the dropdown. This sets the WordPress timezone used to schedule events.
Sport — Select a sport preset from the grouped dropdown. The default selection is Association Football (Soccer). Choosing a sport applies the preset data (positions, outcomes, results, statistics, league table columns) to your site.
Main League — Enter a name for your primary competition or league. Default placeholder: Primary League.
Current Season — Enter a label for the current season. Defaults to the current four-digit year.
Click Continue to save and proceed, or Skip this step to move on without saving.
Step 2: Teams
Heading: Team Setup
Add your first two teams:
Home Team — The name of your primary team. Placeholder: What is your team called?
Rival Team — The name of an opposing team. Placeholder: Who are you playing against next?
Both teams are automatically assigned to the league and season created in Step 1. Additional teams can be added later. Click Continue or Skip this step.
Step 3: Players & Staff
Heading: Player & Staff Setup
Add initial players and a staff member:
Players — Three rows are shown. Each row accepts a # (squad number), Name, and Position. If the sport preset defined positions, those are pre-filled in the position field. You can add more players later.
Staff — One row: Name and Job. The job field defaults to Coach.
All players and the staff member are assigned to the home team and the league/season from Step 1. Click Continue or Skip this step.
Step 4: Venue
Heading: Venue Setup
Enter your home venue details:
Name — The venue's name. Placeholder: Venue.
Address — The venue's street address. A map displays below the address field with a draggable marker. Default address shown: Marvel Stadium, Melbourne.
Hidden fields store latitude and longitude from the map marker position.
The venue is linked to the home team. Click Continue or Skip this step.
Step 5: Pages
Heading: Pages
The wizard offers to auto-create three starter pages if they do not already exist:
Page type | Description used |
Calendar | Organize and publish calendars using different layouts. |
League Table | Create automated league tables to keep track of team standings. |
Player List | Create team rosters, player galleries, and ranking charts. |
Each page is published with sample content and flagged with the _sp_sample post meta key so it can be identified as demo content. Click Continue or Skip this step.
Step 6: Ready!
Heading: Thanks for installing!
The final screen presents two actions:
Schedule your first event! — Opens a pre-created draft event in the editor. The event is pre-populated with the teams, players, and venue from previous steps.
SportsPress Themes (Pro) — A panel recommending official SportsPress themes for guaranteed compatibility. Includes a Learn more link to
tboy.co/themes.
A Twitter share button is also shown on this screen.
Skipping the Wizard
Clicking Not right now on the Introduction screen or navigating away exits the wizard without making any changes. All settings can be configured manually under SportsPress > Settings.
