Choosing a Sport Preset

A sport preset is a bundle of pre-configured data for a specific sport. Applying a preset populates your site with the correct positions, outcomes (win/draw/loss), results (goals, points, etc.), performance metrics (statistics tracked per player per event), league table columns, and related equations for that sport.

What a Preset Configures

When a preset is applied, the following content types are created or replaced:

  • Positions — Player positions (e.g., Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder, Forward for soccer)

  • Outcomes — Match outcomes (e.g., Win, Draw, Loss) with conditions

  • Results — Score types (e.g., Goals) including the primary result used for display

  • Performance — Per-player statistics tracked in event box scores (e.g., Goals, Assists, Yellow Cards)

  • Columns — League table columns (e.g., Played, Won, Drawn, Lost, Goals For, Goals Against, Points) with equations

  • Metrics — Player measurement fields (e.g., Height, Weight)

  • Specs — Event specification fields

  • Statistics — Aggregate player statistics (e.g., career totals, averages)

Important: Applying a new preset deletes all existing preset-created content (posts flagged with _sp_preset) and replaces them with the new preset's data. Any custom content you created manually is not affected, but any equations or settings you customized within the preset data will be overwritten. Apply presets with care on a site that already has data.

The default preset when SportsPress is first installed is Association Football (Soccer).

How to Apply a Preset

During the Setup Wizard

On the Basic Setup step, select your sport from the Sport dropdown. The preset is applied when you click Continue.

From General Settings

  1. Navigate to SportsPress > Settings.

  2. Click the General tab.

  3. Under the Sport field, select a sport from the grouped dropdown.

  4. Click Save Changes.

The preset is applied immediately when the sport changes. A Configure button next to the dropdown links to the advanced sport configuration screen at SportsPress > Configure.

Sport-Specific Extensions

After selecting certain sports, SportsPress may recommend a free companion plugin for extended functionality:

  • Baseball → SportsPress for Baseball

  • Basketball → SportsPress for Basketball

  • Cricket → SportsPress for Cricket

  • Golf → SportsPress for Golf

  • Soccer → SportsPress for Football (Soccer)

  • Volleyball → SportsPress for Volleyball

These are separate free plugins available on WordPress.org. They are optional and can be installed from the recommendation notice.

Changing a Preset Later

You can change the sport preset at any time from SportsPress > Settings > General. Each change replaces the preset data. Manual customizations to positions, columns, or equations made after a preset was applied will be overwritten for any item that was originally created by the preset.
